The villa probably dates to the early 1400s. The first owners were probably the Strozzi family, followed by the Lapi, the Uguccioni, and the Cavalcanti.

The direct line of this family—that of the poet Guido, Dante’s companion—died out in the 18th century but continued in the Cattani-Cavalcanti branch. The Cavalcanti family enlarged the structure of the villa by adding two side wings to the central portion, on which they raised the second story and the roof loggia that is today the symbol of Villa Castelletti.
In the second half of 1800, Count Leopoldo Cattani Cavalcanti transformed the property into a model agricultural estate. The most significant related initiative was undoubtedly the foundation of the Istituto Agrario Filantropico (Philanthropic Agricultural Institute). In the late 1800s the estate became the home of the Montagliari Mayer counts, of Germanic origin.
